desertification meeting full of
empty words for world’s poorest
The seventh Conference of the Parties to
the Convention to Combat Desertification
(CCD) took place in October in Nairobi. This
meeting was a perfect illustration of the
fact that the leaders of the world’s richest
countries have no real intention of combating
poverty and further impoverishment. This
attitude caused yet another deadlock in the
discussions about how to speed up the
implementation of the Convention, and left
the many affected countries with little hope
that it will ever develop into an effective
instrument to halt the continued degradation
of dryland forests and other ecosystems that
the world’s poorest communities so
desperately depend on.
