Most of the population in La Jagua arrived with the discovery of carbon reserves. Mining is practiced by men and young people who think it's a strange but necessary way of making a living. This is different from the type of mining in the Cundiboya plateau, where carbon mining has traditionally been practiced as a cultural activity that involves the whole family, and that continues without improving the socio-economic conditions of the region. The mines of La Jagua de Ibérico were recently acquired by Glencore. 100% of its production has been exported and continues to be exported to European and Northern American countries.
