International financial institutions should be completely open , democratic and transparent. All lending for development projects should be subject to strict and adequate environmental and social policies.

  • Civil society should have control over international financial institutions.
  • Communities should have the right to say "no" to projects and programmes that do not benefit them.

Complaint and accountability mechanisms, like inspection panels , could help.

These policies may look impressive on paper but they are not always implemented in practice.

People are still being moved away en masse from their homelands without proper consultation or compensation.
