Blockade forces Freeport to halt mining at Grasberg

newsjfeb2006

Mining giant Freeport McMoRan was forced to halt operations at the Grasberg gold and copper mine in Indonesia after hundreds of local residents blocked a key access road to protest efforts to relocate them. According to WALHI/FoE Indonesia, at least three indigenous people were shot and taken to the hospital. The police and company security side also suffered injuries. Residents are demanding that James Moffet, CEO of Freeport McMoRan, visit the site and negotiate with the indigenous landowners.

In May 2006 shareholders joined with West Papuans and Bougainvilleans to address Rio Tinto's AGM. The Indonesian Environment Forum (WALHI) launched on May 3 2006 a damning environmental report on the Rio Tinto joint venture at the Freeport Mine, ahead of shareholder concerns and protests to be held outside the company's Annual General Meeting
