Mining giant Freeport McMoRan was forced
to halt operations at the Grasberg gold and
copper mine in Indonesia after hundreds of
local residents blocked a key access road to
protest efforts to relocate them. According
to WALHI/FoE Indonesia, at least three
indigenous people were shot and taken to the
hospital. The police and company security
side also suffered injuries. Residents are
demanding that James Moffet, CEO of Freeport
McMoRan, visit the site and negotiate with
the indigenous landowners.
