The mission of the World Bank is to alleviate poverty. However, investing in an oil pipeline in Cameroon and gold and copper mining in Peru hardly contribute to fulfilling that mission. In these videos, people from the countries share their experiences.

They conclude that instead of
bringing sustainable development to the
impacted regions, the local communities are
negatively affected. International donor
money could be used in better ways. Based on
the experiences in Cameroon, Peru and
elsewhere, Friends of the Earth International
calls for a phase out of public financing for
fossil fuel and mining projects.

Peru: Alleviating
poverty?
The video
'The World Bank and Mining in Peru' presents
the cases of Tambo Grande, Yanacocha and
Quellaveco. These are three large scale gold
and copper mining projects that instead of
bringing benefits to the poor, directly
compete with and jeopardize agriculture. The
World Bank is currently involved in two of
these projects.

Cameroon: 'If
this is development, you can keep it'
In July 2000
the World Bank and the European Investment
Bank approved loans for the drilling of oil
wells in Chad and the construction of a
pipeline through Cameroon. This project is
supposed to be an example of how oil
exploitation can alleviate poverty. This film
documents the effects of the pipeline
construction on communities living along the
route. It outlines the promises made, and
broken, by the banks, the governments of both
countries and the oil companies. Read
