The Aboriginal peoples of the Kakadu region are deeply concerned that their culture - based on a close affinity with and relationship to the land and believed to be the oldest continuing culture on earth - will be destroyed if plans to excavate and export uranium from the Jabiluka mine proceed. Senior Traditional Owner Yvonne Margarula has been a powerful and consistent opponent of Jabiluka and advocate for the Mirrar traditional owners.

Kakadu includes Ramsar listed wetlands, over a third of Australia’s bird species and is one of less than twenty sites listed on the World Heritage register for both natural and cultural values. The nearby Ranger mine is already causing deep concern, because of its appalling safety record and worries about the impact of 40 million tonnes of radioactive mine tailings.
