Friends of the Earth International strongly condemn the police operations in the Tzeltal communities in the state of Chiapas, which have evicted families from the Biosphere of Montes Azules, Lacandon Jungle. The evictions are thought to have taken place to make way for palm oil plantations.

On February 17, 2010, Victor Galvez a leader of the Natural Resources and Indigenous Peoples Rights group (FRENA) became the third member of the group to lose his life in suspicious circumstances. FRENA is involved in exposing the excessive charges levied by energy company Unión FENOSA in Guatemala. Your help is needed in denouncing and calling for an investigation into these deaths.

Haiti earthquake: call for solidarity funds

On January 12, 2010 Haiti suffered a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, along with numerous aftershocks. Two months later, as many as 300,000 people are thought to have lost their lives and more than a million are homeless. The situation in Haiti continues to deteriorate, as the rainy season has started, and floods are predicted to present yet another serious threat to at least 200,000 homeless people.
