Friends of the Earth Colombia are asking for your help to show solidarity with José Abelardo Salgado, an environmentalist who disappeared on 31 March 2008.

At the time of his disappearance Mr Salgado was on his way to provide environmental consultancy services in Cerro Azul in the Valle del Cauca region in Colombia.

Mr Salgado is a member of FEDENA-Fundación Ecológica Fenicia Defensa Natural, a local Colombian environmental group. In the last 15 years he has undertaken activities aimed at the restoration, protection and conservation of the environment in the central region of Valle del Cauca, he was the founder and current facilitator of the FEDENA foundation and the whole process around the Páramo del Duende (Duende highlands), and he created the Duende Carnival in the district of Fenicia.

He has contributed to strengthen the Red de Turismo del Centro delValle (a tourism network in the central region of the Valle del Cauca department), a body that is coordinated by the Tuluá Chamber of Commerce and the Governor´s office. This is one of many projects he has led to further the environmental, cultural and social development of his community.

His social, community and environmental work within his community and the region have earned him a high degree of recognition and respect.

Dear Vice-President,

I have learnt that the environmentalist Mr. JOSÉ ABELARDO SALGADO LONDOÑO disappeared on March 31 this year when he was heading to Cerro Azul, in the municipality of Trujillo, Valle del Cauca department, where he was going to provide environmental consultancy services.

José Abelardo Salgado Londoño is a member of FEDENA-Fundación Ecológica Fenicia Defensa Natural, an environmental group based in the district of Fenicia in the municipality of Riofrío, Valle del Cauca. In the last fifteen (15) years, he has undertaken activities aimed at the restoration, protection and conservation of the environment in the central region of Valle del Cauca, he was the founder and current facilitator of the FEDENA foundation and the whole process around the Páramo del Duende (Duende highlands), and he created the Duende Carnival in the district of Fenicia. Moreover, his social, community and environmental work in his community and the region have earned him the recognition and the respect that he now holds both from communities and institutions.

He has contributed to strengthen the Red de Turismo del Centro del Valle (a Tourism network in the central region of the Valle del Cauca department), a body that is coordinated by the Tuluá Chamber of Commerce, Funcevalle and the Valle del Cauca Governor´s office, through its Secretariat for Culture and Tourism. This is one of the projects, amongst many others, that he has led on behalf of the environmental, cultural and social development of our community. He is currently the local coordinator for the Páramo del Duende, in the context of the Andean Highlands Project under the CVC – IavH – Fedena framework agreement.

I call on you to you do everything in your power to safeguard the life and well being of José Salgado, and ensure his swift return to his family and colleagues.
