Execution of Local Communities In the Name of Conservation

Join us in calling on the Prime Minister of Swaziland to uphold the rights of the local communities who are evicted from their land, terrorized and murdered, all in the name of nature conservation.

We need you to act now and call on the Prime Minister of Swaziland to urgently intervene.

1. The immediate arrest of the killers of Musa Gamedze and access to justice for all other victims of abuse, torture and killings by Big Game Parks in the name of conservation.

2. Freedom of the press is respected and acts of intimidation that are being carried out are addressed accordingly.

3. Assurances that Friends of the Earth Swaziland is safe from abuse and harm by the implicated killers

Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to express my deep concern at the recent execution of Musa Gamedze on 8th August 2008.

I urge you to ensure this murder is promptly, effectively, independently and thoroughly investigated, and that the alleged perpetrators are brought to justice.

I call upon you to publicly condemn and take effective measures to prevent any further abuses by Big Game Parks, including by investigating all allegations of torture and killings, and to put an end on the reign of terror inflicted on local communities by initiating the process towards repealing Section 23 of the Game Act.

If Swaziland wishes to be viewed as a country that respects the rule of law and complies with its international human rights obligations, the government must take concrete actions to make legal reforms and protection of human rights a reality. This includes respecting the freedom of the press and the right of non governmental organizations, such as, Yonge Nawe (Friends of the Earth Swaziland) to go about their work without harassment.
