shell flare
On the day that oil giant Shell's quarterly earnings report was made public, Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands) lit a 15-metre high flare in front of Shell's headquarters in The Hague, the Netherlands. Milieudefensie is protesting the gas flaring in Nigeria and needs your support to get Shell to comply with the court order to stop gas flaring in Nigeria by 30 April 2007.

The deadline has expired but the flares are still burning.

Shell is one of the world's largest producers of gas and oil. In 2006
the giant earned record-breaking annual profits of $25.4 billion, but the environment and people who live nearby Shell's
activities are losing out. With just one year's earnings, it
could put an end to many of the environmental and health problems which
accompany its projects.
For example in Nigeria oil leaks and
gas flaring have for decades been causing major problems for people and
the environment in the Niger Delta. Shell has continued to
postpone solving these problems.
