PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Friday 3rd December 1999

"Seattle Seven" Earth-Wreckers announced

Friends of the Earth International hosted the first annual WTO Earth Wrecker Awards at the 1999 Seattle Ministerial. In the run up to and during the Ministerial, a few governments and corporations stood out from all the rest, due to their relentless efforts to promote trade policies that threaten people and the planet.

This year’s awards go to:

Canada and Monsanto

for pushing GM foods down our throats

The United States

and the American Forest and Paper Association

for failing the world’s forests

The European Union and Nestle

for pushing unwanted investment on the developing world

A seventh, "people’s choice" award was made for the corporate executive or government negotiator who received the most votes in FOE’s "Seattle Challenge" expose of the shadowy figures behind trade liberalization. The lucky winner was:

Charlene Barshefsky

For telling bare-faced lies to the media about transparency and forests - with style!
