climate talks fail yet again

Friends of the Earth today expressed disappointment after an attempt by EU ministers to relaunch international talks on climate change appears to have ended in failure. The US has reportedly said that it will not attend talks in Oslo that had been scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Tony Juniper, Policy and Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth said:

"We are extremely disappointed that the governments of the world still can't agree a solution for tackling global climate change, the biggest environmental threat facing the world. Whilst they dither and delay, millions of people whose lives, livelihoods and homes are threatened will be placed at greater risk.

"The world must reach agreement, but it must be an effective one. Last week President Clinton said that climate change was a ëbig deal'. Now he needs to act. The US must face up to its global responsibilities and massively reduce the level of greenhouse gases it emits. The UN talks in Nairobi next month may be his last chance."
