PRESS RELEASE
Prague, 26th
September 2000
Environmental and debt
reduction groups denounce
violence in Prague today, call
for dialogue
International environmental and
debt reduction networks denounce
the violent clashes that took
place today in Prague between
radical groups and Czech police
forces.
The organizers of the Public
Discussion Forum "A Different
Message", CEE Bankwatch Network,
Friends of the Earth
International and Jubilee 2000,
support the thousands of peaceful
protesters today, who delivered a
clear message to the IMF and
World Bank that time has come for
the institutions to change.
At the same time, they condemn
that some groups abused the
protests to engage themselves in
violent confrontations with the
police. The organisations think
that such actions undermine the
efforts to advocate positive
changes within the
institutions.
The organisers of the Public
Forum invite everyone who wishes
to learn about the critique on
the World Bank and the
International Monetary Fund
policies and practices, to attend
the closing session of the Forum.
There, representatives of NGOs
will engage in a discussion with
vice-presidents of the IMF and
the World Bank on the future role
of the institutions.
Time and location of the
forum: Wednesday 27th, 10-13 h,
Evangelic Salvator`s church,
Salvatorska street, Prague 1.
