PHOTO COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED


The judges have made their choices for the 2008 Friends of the Earth International photo competition and the top five winning photos are now here

This year's theme was "Dreams, Hopes and Possibilities for a Better World."

More than 600 photos were received from 62 countries around the world, from amateur and professional photographers ranging in age from 10 to 67 year old. The photos were organized into two categories -- Reclaiming Tradition, and Building Towards the Future -- and were judged both on technical merit and on relevance to the theme of the competition.

AND THE WINNERS ARE:

First place: Michael Foley, Ireland
Second place: Alfredo Felipa, Peru
Third place: Supriya Biswas, India
Fourth place: Martin Chamberland, Canada
Fifth place: Nitin Khatri, India
Sixth place (tied, two photos): Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, Bangladesh
Sixth place (tied): Michael Foley, Ireland
Seventh place: Chi Keung Wong, Hong Kong
Eighth place (tied): Chi Keung Wong, Hong Kong
Eighth place (tied): Rajib Singha, India
Eighth place (tied): Somenath Mukhopadhyay, India
Eighth place (tied):: Sarah Caldwell Watson, New Zealand
Ninth place: Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, Bangladesh
Tenth place (tied): Shokoufeh Malekkiani, Iran

Category "Building Towards the Future"

First place: Julius Mwelu, Kenya
Second place: Ayan Sinha, India
Third place: Abir Abdullah, Bangladesh
Fourth place: Michael Foley, Ireland

Sixth place: Abir Abdullah, Bangladesh
Seventh place: Harjono Djoyobisono, Indonesia
Eighth place (tied): David Martínez, Spain
Eighth place (tied): Chi Keung Wong, Hong Kong
Ninth place: David Martínez, Spain
Tenth place (tied): Shoeb Faruquee, Bangladesh
Tenth place (tied): CEIBA/FoE Guatemala, Guatemala


A selection of the photos will be printed in our 2009 wall calendar,  which will be available for order from www.foei.org in July.

The judges for the competition were:

- Yann Arthus-Bertrand, world renowned aerial photographer of the
planet's ecosystems (www.yannarthusbertrand.com)
- Bangladeshi photographer G.M.B. Akash, first-place winner of last
year's photo competition and cover photographer of the 2007 calendar
(www.gmb-akash.com).
- Peter Menzel, US photojournalist and author of "Hungry Planet: What
The World Eats" (www.menzelphoto.com).
- Akintunde Akinleye, first-place winner World Press Photo 2007 in "Spot
News" category, from Nigeria (www.akintunde1.com).
- Daniel Beltrá, from Seattle-based Spanish environmental and nature photography specialist and winner of the 2007 World Press Photo prize for his work on soy plantations and Amazon deforestation (www.danielbeltra.com).
- Indian photographer Shantanu Das, first-place winner of the 2008 Friends of the Earth International photo competition.
- Judy Pasimio from Friends of the Earth Philippines
- Oscar Rivas from FoE Paraguay
- Zenabu Sakibu from FoE Ghana
- Bente Hessellund Andersen from FoE Denmark
