EARTHQUAKE
SOLIDARITY
El Salvador has been hit by a number of
earthquakes in 2001. FoE El Salvador has
also suffered from these earthquakes: their
office was damaged, and employees lost
loved ones. This was sadly ironic, as most
of the destruction was due to irresponsible
development projects against which FoE El
Salvador has been campaigning for
years.
When FoEI Chair Ricardo Navarro sent
around a message explaining the situation
after the first earthquake in January, many
at BUND/FoE Germany felt that this
predicament called for some FoE solidarity.
An e-mail was sent to all BUND employees
and active members asking them to give
directly to our partners in El Salvador. As
a result, FoE Germany's Daniel Mittler
presented Ricardo Navarro with DM 9,000
(US$4,270) at a March FoEI meeting in
Amsterdam. Not much, but a sign of FoEI
solidarity that will hopefully be repeated
in the future.
