agrofuels strategy meeting
Connected to the strategic planning sessions in Swaziland, FoEI held a strategy meeting on agrofuels to agree on an international position and identify areas for campaigning in order to stop the development, production and trade of agrofuels. The outcome of this meeting was a series of campaign objectives:
- To expose, raise awareness, mobilise and build resistance against agrofuels.
- To expose that agrofuels are a false solution to the energy and climate crisis, which is provoked by the unsustainable development model.
- To stop the take over and exploitation of territories for agrofuel production.
- To halt all targets and other incentives, including subsidies, carbon trading and public and private finance related to the development and production of agrofuels.
- To confront the belief that the certification of agrofuels guarantees sustainability.
- To use the debate over agrofuels to raise awareness, mobilise and build resistance against corporate driven unsustainable production, consumption and trade in agricultural products, and how they threaten food sovereignty.
- To promote peoples’ energy sovereignty and genuine solutions to climate change such as safe clean renewable energy, energy savings and efficiency and sustainable transportation.
There was agreement to launch an international campaign on agrofuels, and FoEI issued a statement regarding agrofuels in time for the climate talks on Bali, where governments discussed agrofuels as a solution to climate change. FoEI representatives in Bali denounced the promotion of agrofuels as a false solution to the climate crisis.
