hungary: giant ice cube & bicycle lobby tour for the climate
In April, a giant 1.5 tonne ice cube was wrapped in insulating material. Yet by World Environment Day, it was clear to all that 75 percent of the ice had lasted for the two months, thanks to the insulation. However, once the cube was unwrapped, it melted within a single day. To accompany the action, a bicycle and energy-awareness presents were distributed.
The following day, a delegation of more than 100 environmental NGO representatives cycled to launch a public debate on the National Climate Change Strategy. They stopped at the offices of all five political parties and at the Parliament. At each venue, delegates handed over a ten-point petition signed by 43 NGOs with their proposals related to climate strategy.
The top representative of each party promised to promote the inclusion of the 10 points into the strategy, and at Parliament, the economic and environment minister was also receptive. Friends of the Earth Hungary was among the main initiators of the petition and the action, which were accompanied by massive media coverage.
