south africa: in the wake of arcelormittal
Friends of the Earth South Africa was the driving force in developing a global community response to the poor corporate environmental practice of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, which is based out of Luxemburg.
In coalition with many other organizations, Friends of the Earth International launched a publication entitled “In the wake of ArcelorMittal: the global steel giant's local impacts” in May 2008. The publication included case studies on the company's impacts near their operations in Ohio (US), Romania, India, the Ukraine, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Kazakhstan, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On May 13, 2008, activists from Friends of the Earth and other groups attended the ArcelorMittal annual general meeting to protest and question the company's global practices.
