papua new guinea: reaching young people through music

In 2008, Friends of the Earth Papua New Guinea (PNG) produced an environmental music album containing 10 songs and one poem sung in English and local languages. The music was recorded by a popular local band, P2UIF. The music album was a creative way to reach out to young people with the group's messages about the environment, sustainability and respect.

In the following days, the music was promoted to the public through the radio and television. A concert was organized, during which FoE PNG staff spoke about their campaigns and gave out information to the crowd.

The launch of the music album attacted national media attention and resulted in numerous information requests being sent to FoE Papua New Guinea. It has created a lot of goodwill among members of the public towards the organization. Program Officer Harrison Owage said: "This was a milestone for our campaigns, and it has encouraged us to push forward into greater things."
