austria: public pressure secures climate bill commitment
what happened?
Friends of the Earth Austria / GLOBAL 2000 launched their SOS Climate campaign, as part of FOE Europe’s Big Ask on climate change, which aims to get governments and the European Union to commit to annual cuts in emissions to fight climate change.
FoE Austria and its new youth group mobilized thousands of people across Austria to ask politicians to commit to a climate change law. They organized actions and events to encourage people to send letters and emails to their MPs.
They also conducted a study on the impacts of climate change, and publicized the findings through the media in different Austrian regions.
what changed?
Thanks to the public pressure mobilized by FoE Austria, the new coalition of Social Democrats and Conservatives committed to adopt a climate bill as part of their coalition agreement.
what next?
The Social Democrat/Conservative coalition was sworn into power in 2008. FoE Austria will continue to mobilize public pressure to ensure that the Austrian government fulfills its commitment to pass a climate change law.
