chile: building the movement for climate justice
In November 2007, FoE Chile / CODEFF sent a representative to one of FoEI’s Strategic Planning meetings in Swaziland, where they learned more about FoEI’s program and thematic areas: they had a particular interest in finding out about the Climate Justice and Energy (CJE) Program and FoEI’s Communications work. In 2008, CODEFF began to participate actively in the CJE program, and other FoEI strategy and skill share meetings. They also sent activists to UNFCCC climate change negotiations (in Croatia, Ghana and Poznan) and to key mobilization events (especially those of the new Movement of Victims and People Affected by Climate Change (MOVIAC)).
FoE Chile has also built a strong national campaign on climate justice and energy, organizing seminars and workshops, and producing outreach materials including pamphlets, briefings and stickers. These have been widely distributed and exhibited, in public spaces, universities, events and meetings, and sent to NGOs, social and political organizations and trade unions, governmental agencies and international organizations.
FoE Chile has also been monitoring Chile's official position in the UNFCCC negotiations including during the 14th Conference of the Parties in Poznan, and has shared its analysis publicly. FoE Chile has also begun to identify communities impacted by climate change who might benefit from sharing their experiences and learning from others in the same situation, through MOVIAC.
These workshops helped to create the first real spaces where Chilean civil society could begin to discuss climate change. A new "Alianza por la Justicia Climatica" (Climate Justice Alliance) was now been launched in Chile, by a range of Chilean civil society organizations, including FoE Chile/CODEFF, Acción Ecológica, Acción por la Tierra Chile, Asociación Nacional de Mujeres Rurales e Indígenas ANAMURI, Chile Sustentable, Defensores del Bosque Chileno, EcoUchile, Fiscalía del Medio Ambiente-FIMA, Instituto de Ecología Política, Observatorio Ciudadano, Observatorio Latinoamericano de Conflictos Ambientales, Red de Jóvenes Investigadores ante el Cambio Climático, Recicla UC and Red de Defensa de la Precordillera.
