the west african gas pipeline
problem: Oil and Gas Conflicts in the
Western Delta
|
|
|
|
Our recommendation
Conflicts over resource ownership
and control in the Niger Delta should
be addressed before WAGP is
constructed.

|
|
Gas for the WAGP will be sourced from the
Escravos area in the Western Niger Delta, an
area noted for violent conflicts arising from
competition for control of land and
resources
between communities, the
Nigerian government and the oil and gas
companies.
Without progress on the resolution of
these issues, local communities fear that
WAGP may exacerbate the
crisis
in the area, leading to
further disruptions in gas supply, and
worsening the insecurity and impoverishment
in the area.
WAGP is touted as a contributor to
regional integration. Ghana has a long
standing political and socio-economic
relationship with Nigeria . However, trade in
a resource that originated from
unresolved conflicts
may
endanger rather than strengthen this
relationship. If this occurs, the project may
serve as a basis for a conflict that could
degenerate into regional disintegration.
WAGPco has stated they will not be
responsible for indirect impacts of the
pipeline. As a result,
local
people
who may suffer from WAGP’s
adverse indirect impacts, including human
rights violations, will have no specified
means of seeking redress. The project seems
to be unwilling to provide security to
potentially affected people in
West-Africa.
