problem: Public consultation
|
|
Our recommendations
WAGPco should provide:
-
A list of planned consultations
and information activities,
-
Information about potentially
impacted communities
-
Responses to issues raised
|
|
|
To date, public consultation and
information dissemination about WAGP has been
inadequate. For example, the draft EIA was
not displayed in advertised locations for
public and affected community people to
study, and was not disclosed long enough in
advance of consultations to allow for
meaningful public comment on the
documents.
Affected people in Ghana have not received
detailed information on possible resettlement
plans or compensation schemes. These issues
were missing from the Environmental Impact
Assessment, while WAGPco only provided vague
and unconvincing answers when questioned
about them.
The EIA process in Ghana was conducted in
a selective manner and seemed to provide
no open avenue for civil society
participation
. The exercise
therefore impeded any meaningful public
participation.
