plantations - latest
Friends of the Earth International is opposed to the conversion of forests and other ecosystems into large-scale monoculture plantations, and calls for a halt to the resulting displacement of indigenous peoples and environmental destruction. We campaign to reduce global consumption of the products these plantations support (timber, paper and oil) and work with local people to defend their land rights.
Monoculture tree plantations have disastrous effects on the environment and the health of neighbouring communities.
“Health
is a very big concern in our place right now we breathe in the
chemicals... I’m pretty sure we are inhaling dangerous substances and
definitely are dying every minute. Some women had babies who developed
asthma when they were just one or two months old. Chemicals are killing
us; we will all die sooner.”
