Friends of the Earth (Malta) Moviment ghall-Ambjent, has been active in the environmental field since 1985. The group was first set up as an umbrella organization with representatives from various youth and environment groups, but soon developed into a committee of activists. The stance of the movement is for strong sustainability which is informed by "deep" ecological values. The group has concentrated its energies on the issues of land use, energy, pollution, and waste. The group has been successful in opposing many of the major developments which threatened to deplete Malta's countryside and coast. This work is supplemented by on-going educational activities and the preparation of reports on diverse environmental problems. Since 1994 the movement has put on the public agenda the threats posed by tourism to the Maltese islands, and has organized conferences, workshops, and meetings wherein those involved with the tourism industry have cooperated to achieve higher environmental standards in order to improve tourism destinations. The group also participated in the Sustainable Europe campaign and is currently lobbying for Malta to aim towards achieving equitable and sustainable levels of consumption by the year 2010.
