Friends of the Earth New Zealand (FoENZ) was formed in 1975, and is well known throughout New Zealand as a watchdog environmental group. Their original focus was on the protection of native forests. Activities have since expanded into many areas. FoENZ assisted in attaining and preserving New Zealand's "nuclear free" status. It is now also active on genetic engineering, waste, and trade and investment issues. The organization joined FoEI in 1983, and publishes a quarterly newsletter, "Earth." FoENZ operates as a volunteer organization with hundreds of members throughout New Zealand.
