alliances

Friends of the Earth International works closely with La Via Campesina and the World March of Women on a wide range of issues including food sovereignty, sustainable agriculture and poverty.

The strategic alliances we are involved in are long-term commitments with organizations who share our vision of sustainable societies.

In our alliances we are committed to collaborating in order to strengthen each other at global, regional, national and local levels and in areas of work such as; campaigning, communications, membership development, learning, active solidarity and fundraising.

We also believe strategic allies should rely on each other’s areas of expertise, and so work with strategic allies that represent particular constituencies and issues.

Currently we have a strategic alliance with the movement of peasant farmers; La Via Campesina. We also work closely, although not in a formal alliance, with the feminist action movement; World March of Women.

La Via Campesina is an international movement of peasants, small- and medium-sized producers, landless, rural women, indigenous people, rural youth and agricultural workers, which works to defend the values and the basic interests of their members. They are an autonomous, pluralist and multicultural movement, independent of any political, economic, or other type of affiliation. Their members are from 56 countries from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

The principal objective of La Via Campesina is to develop solidarity and unity among small farmer organizations in order to promote gender parity and social justice in fair economic relations; the preservation of land, water, seeds and other natural resources; food sovereignty; sustainable agricultural production based on small and medium-sized producers.

The World March of Women is an international feminist action movement connecting grassroots groups and organizations working to eliminate the causes at the root of poverty and violence against women. After organizing the World March of Women in the year 2000, the March rapidly established itself as formidable international movement which campaigns against all forms of inequality and discrimination directed at women. Their values and actions are directed at making political, economic and social change. They centre on the globalization of solidarity; equality between women and men, among women themselves and between peoples; the respect and recognition of diversity among women; the multiplicity of our strategies; the appreciation of women's leadership; and the strength of alliances among women and with other progressive social movements.

Friends of the Earth International also works closely with other social movements around the world. We are actively seeking to build strategic alliances with indigenous peoples movements, among other movements of peoples who are affected by environmental and social injustices and who are resisting and mobilizing for transformation towards sustainable societies.
