groundWork / Friends of the Earth South Africa

groundWork is a non-profit, environmental justice NGO working in Southern Africa, founded in 1999. The organization’s vision is to see communities affected by industrial pollution better equipped to defend and promote their environmental rights at the local, national and international level.

groundWork seeks to improve the quality of life of vulnerable people in South Africa, and increasingly in Southern Africa, through assisting civil society to have a greater impact on environmental governance. groundWork places particular emphasis on assisting vulnerable and previously disadvantaged people who are most affected by environmental injustices. There are six main campaign areas:

  • Air quality

  • Climate and energy justice

  • Environmental health

  • Environmental justice school – this has not yet begun

  • Media, information and publications

  • Waste
