Guatemala - no passage for mining in Huehuetenango
28,519 inhabitants of different municipalities in Guatemala have said no to mining exploitation projects. They voted in the community referenda that took place on July 25 and 27 of 2006.

28,519 inhabitants of the municipalities of Colotenango, San Juan Atitan, Todos Santos Cuchumatanes, Concepcion Huista and Santiago Chimaltenango, of the Huehuetenango Department in Guatemala have said no to mining exploitation projects. They voted in the recent community referenda that took place on July 25 and 27 of 2006.
The results per municipality are the following:
Colotenango: 7,905 votes for no to mining,
50 in favor
San Juan Atitan: 5,919 votes for no to
mining, 0 in favor
Todos Santos: 6,634 votes for no to mining,
0 in favor
Concepcion Huista: 4,971 votes for no to
mining, 0 in favor
Santiago Chimaltenango: 3,090 votes for no
to mining, 0 in favor
Total consulted inhabitants: 28,519
These results confirm the legitimate and popular will of the consulted communities, and show once more that land, forest and water are important bases for the survival and the development of our communities.
