Following the collapse of the WTO's negotiations in Cancun in September 2003, most of the WTO's 'Doha agenda' has come to a complete standstill. There have also been further set-backs to the trade liberalising agenda including in the development of the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (ALCA). As a result, a unique opportunity to challenge the current trade liberalization dynamic has opened up.

As a contribution to the current debate about how to utilise that opportunity, FoEI plans to host a dynamic workshop in which participants analyse the way in which the proposed WTO negotiations would impact on equity and the environment specifically (including availability of and equitable access to natural resources).

The workshop will also seek to assess the bearing that the collapse of the Cancun negotiations has in these specific areas; and to work out strategies for joint campaigns to maximise the potential of the current opportunity to push for the development of fair and sustainable economies.
