McPlanet.com@wsf: Ecology, Globalization
and the Rights of the Poor
McPlanet.com was a major conference on
globalization and the environment in Berlin,
Germany in 2003. Now McPlanet.com comes to
Mumbai, India. At the World Social Forum
(Jan, 16- 21 2004), Attac, BUND/ Friends of
the Earth Germany and Greenpeace in
cooperation with the
Heinrich-Boell-Foundation and the Wuppertal-
Institute are organizing a joint panel on
ecology, globalization and the rights of the
poor
Monday, January 19th from 13:00- 16:00,
venue A3
How does globalization affect the
livelihoods of the poor? That's the key
question of the discussion. A majority of the
world's population, mainly in the South,
depends on natural resources directly for
their survival. Environmental destruction
undermines their ways of living, their
culture and their rights as human beings.
Grassroots activists affected will give
testimonies.
Panelists include:
Anuradha Mittal (Food First),
Farida Akhter (UBINIG Bangladesh),
Medha Patkar* (Narmada-Movement),
Sunita Narain (Centre for Science and
Environment)
as well as activists from the Korean small
farmers-movement, climate victims and
survivors of the Bhopal catastrophe. Wolfgang
Sachs (Wuppertal-Institute) and Joan
Martinez-Alier (Autonomous University of
Barcelona) will frame the discussion.
