The UNFCCC Climate negotiations (COP30) have officially opened in Belém, Brazil. Friends of the Earth International, alongside social and environmental movements from across Brazil and around the world, are gathering at the Peoples’ Summit to reject false solutions, ensure rich countries do their fair share, kick big polluters out and stand in internationalist solidarity.

“It’s been 10 years since the Paris Agreement. Rich countries have monumentally failed to do their fair share of climate action. Climate justice means the Global North must cut emissions first and fastest while providing public and non-debt-creating finance for the Global South. Climate justice means listening to the real solutions led by communities. In the face of global injustice, we are gathering by the tens of thousands, across movements, and pushing these real solutions at the Peoples’ Summit.”

“Rich countries are delaying real action and hiding behind false solutions. We’re seeing it in the push for false solutions like carbon markets that are cementing cycles of extraction and exploitation whilst pushing us ever closer to the frontlines of the climate crisis. Only days ago at the Leaders Summit the Tropical Forests Forever Facility was launched – a scheme that puts profit above peoples, furthers the financialisation of nature, and deepens the debt of countries of the Global South.”

Driving these false solutions that continue to permeate COP30 are the over 5,350 fossil fuel lobbyists representing the corporations responsible for nearly 60% of oil and gas production.

“Peoples are fighting for their lives, demanding justice as they face the devastating reality of corporate power directly. Where is the justice when those same corporations are given a seat at the decision-making table while communities are sidelined? We must kick Big Polluters out. Otherwise, there’s no hope for the COP process.”
