KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – Late night agreement on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) reached on Febr. 26 means there will soon be  international rules for labelling GMO shipments and for liability for damage from GMOs. Only the rubber stamping is needed from the 87 Parties of the ‘Biosafety Protocol’ at their closing meeting here today to confirm that they foiled attempts by the USA and other GMO exporting countries to weaken this newborn international agreement on GMOs.

Juan López of Friends of the Earth International said in Kuala Lumpur:

“Countries that support this important agreement have successfully managed to stop attempts to weaken this Protocol. We look forward to the implementation of global measures that could prevent damage from GMOs and that will make polluters liable internationally.  GMOs pose a real danger to the environment and to the health and livelihoods of people around the world ”
