Friends of the Earth Ghana is a membership organisation association of around 300 local groups spread across the country. It was founded in 1986 and that same year joined Friends of the Earth International. In the past 26 years, the membership of FoE Ghana has exceeded 15,000, which includes individuals, researchers, over 200 Local community groups and institutions of learning, farmers’ groups, youth groups, and academics. As the largest environmental organisation in Ghana, FoE Ghana is dedicated to addressing environmental issues and promoting public awareness of environmental problems.

FoE-Ghana’s mission is the conservation and sustainable use of the world’s natural resources to improve the economic and social well-being of present and future generations. FoE Ghana particularly emphasises the need to integrate environmental sustainability with gender equity.

We play an important role in supporting community projects that empower and educate people to bring about positive changes to their livelihoods. We also campaign for change towards environmentally and socially equitable development in the activities of governments, institutions, businesses and industries. Many successful campaigns and projects have built the organisation’s considerable expertise in forestry and climate change issues. We also play a key role in exposing the negative social and environmental impacts of the West African Gas pipeline, international free trade and large scale mining in forest reserves. FOE Ghana works with others to challenge the injustice and lack of equity in the ongoing international climate change negotiations.
