News from the 2016 climate talks in Marrakech, Morocco

The 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) takes place in Marrakesh, Morocco from November 7-18, 2016. Friends of the Earth International and Friends of the Earth member groups will be there.
Last year Friends of the Earth condemned the Paris Agreement as a sham deal that would not deliver true climate justice. We will be in Marrakesh to speak out on the need for urgent action, not empty words, and to ensure the voices of people impacted by climate change, dirty energy and false solutions are heard.
We have entered ‘decade zero’ – the last few years in which we can still tackle dangerous climate change if we take the necessary drastic action now. For the sake of the planet and its people, greenhouse gas emissions must plummet, but we must not lose sight of the need for equity and justice.
“There are 1.2 billion people living with no access to electricity and over half of those people are in Africa. Africa-led and people-centred initiatives – such as the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative – must be given support to work for people. However, we’re only seeing more of the same – old and indeed new dirty energy projects – oil, coal, gas and big dams, fracking, even tar sands – continue to devastate communities”.
Geoffrey Kamese, Senior Programme Officer, Friends of the Earth Uganda/NAPE
We must continue to build a movement of people who will fight dirty energy, climate change and false solutions. As we come together and mobilise we can overcome corporate power and truly start to change the underlying economic system.
