Defending territories, Defending our lives: Protecting human rights and the environment in Asia Pacific through system change.
Every day, peoples and communities across the world come together to take collective action, often fighting for their collective rights, for dignity and for access to resources and their sustainable use.
Yet many of these Defenders of Territories and Human Rights are being threatened, suppressed or in extreme cases killed. In the last few years, Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific’s member groups’ staff, activists and supporters have been beaten, sued, kidnapped, bankrupted, defamed, jailed and murdered for campaigning for environmental justice.
To keep Defenders safe we need both systemic change and the introduction of practical policies at the local, national and international level, and also within civil society organisations.
Friends of the Earth France Environmental Defenders
Meet people from Africa to Asia who are risking their lives in the fight against transnational corporations that are destroying communities and the environment as well as abusing human rights. In 2017 over 200 activists worldwide were killed for opposing destructive projects. We can end these injustices - a binding treaty is currently being negotiated at the UN to enable all peoples across the world access to justice. We need your support to end corporate impunity and to defend environmental and human rights!

Internationalist Solidarity and the call for a Binding Treaty
Meet the communities of Porto Alegre, Brazil, who are fighting the loss of their homes at the hands of German transnational corporation Fraport. Community struggles have striking similarities the world over, as peoples fight to defend their territories, livelihoods, homes, health and environment. Internationalist solidarity gives us all the strength to fight injustice. It’s time for legally binding rules which hold transnational corporations to account and protect human rights. We need a #BindingTreaty NOW!
Communities fighting corporate power of agribusiness in El Salvador
In El Salvador agribusiness corporations like Bayer-Monsanto promote the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals, causing serious environmental and social impacts in rural communities, affecting the health of the people. We urgently need binding regulations to make corporations accountable and responsible for the devastating impacts of agribusiness worldwide. We demand that governments support the UN Binding Treaty on Transnational Corporations and Human Rights.
