Friends of the Earth Sri Lanka hosts the Friends of the Earth International Biennial General Meeting, October 3-6, 2014
On October 3-6, 2014, Friends of the Earth International delegates gathered for their Biennial General Meeting (BGM) to discuss federation procedures and plans.
Friends of the Earth delegates from more than sixty Friends of the Earth groups around the world also participated in the conference “The role of communities in environmental decision making“, also hosted by Friends of the Earth Sri Lanka in Kandy, Sri Lanka from September 30-October 1st.
Among other decisions, the delegates voted to welcome a new member to the federation, the Bulgarian non-governmental organisation Za Zemiata – from now on also known as “Friends of the Earth Bulgaria” – after two years of associate membership, and enthusiastically welcomed the addition of two new associate members – Centar za životnu sredinu (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the Russian Socio-ecological Union (Russian Federation). They also voted to discontinue Amici della Terra’s (also formerly known as Friends of the Earth Italy) membership.
The Friends of the Earth International general assembly also decided to discontinue its affiliate status membership category. This decision reflects the ongoing reform of Friends of the Earth International’s structures to focus on building the strength and capacity of our 73 full member groups.
Many of our 73 member groups will continue to work with our former “affiliates” and we expect that they will continue to do so in line with our mission, vision and values.
The groups who had held affiliate status are Blue Planet Project, CEE Bankwatch, Corporate Europe Observatory, Corpwatch, EcoPeace/Friends of the Earth Middle East, Peace Boat and WISE.
